The Most Overlooked Features in Exterior House Painting

There are many common features to an home’s architecture that most people will overlook. As an architectural color consultant, I do more than help you select colors. I help you decide where to apply them. Sometimes in places you never thought to consider.

I received my training from the founder of Color in Space, Emily Lauderback. When I re-read the notes from my training, I see little hints of genius sprinkled everywhere. Look at this color design Emily did for an Arts & Crafts Bungalow in Seattle:

A) The braces are painted to match the front door.

B) The rain gutter is cream to match the roofline, then turns to a maroon color to match the brick column.

C) This rain gutter is painted sage to match the home’s siding.

D) The natural wood door has small rectangular accent shapes that echo the cut outs in the low brick walls that surround the front patio. This pattern is repeated again in the double hung windows. All of them are tied together with natural warm hues with red undertones.

This kind of attention to detail unifies a house. It’s the difference between a house that was designed versus a house that “just happened.”  When all the details are taken care of, a house just feels right.
